Porcelain Fixed Bridges

Cosmetic Dentistry — Hershey, PA

Bridge the Gap — Replace Missing Teeth Naturally

A bridge is a custom-made replacement for one or more missing teeth that literally bridges the gap. Artificial teeth attach to gum-colored bases supported by a framework anchored to the healthy teeth on either side. With proper care, a bridge can last 10 to 20 years.

  • Porcelain or combination materials for a lifelike appearance
  • Gold alloys and non-precious alloys available for maximum strength
  • Expected lifespan of 10–20 years with proper home care

Warning Signs You Shouldn't Ignore

If you are missing one or more teeth, you may notice difficulty speaking clearly or chewing comfortably. Changes in your facial shape or a loss of smile confidence are also common signs that a bridge is needed.

Left untreated, missing teeth can lead to an unstable bite that causes dental stress and potential headaches, as well as an increased risk of periodontal disease and decay in the surrounding teeth. A bridge is typically prescribed when one or more teeth are missing and healthy teeth exist on both sides of the gap.

Choosing the Right Bridge for You

Dr. Patel will recommend the bridge type and material best suited to your bite, bone structure, and aesthetic goals.

A removable bridge can be taken out for daily cleaning and is the preferred option when the adjacent anchor teeth are too weak, when multiple teeth are missing, or when there are no posterior anchor teeth present to support a fixed restoration.

A fixed bridge is permanently bonded or anchored via crowns on the adjacent teeth, providing superior stability and a feel most patients compare to their natural teeth. Daily cleaning with a floss threader or specialized interdental aid keeps the bridge and surrounding tissue healthy.

Bridges can be fabricated from gold alloys, non-precious alloys, full porcelain, or a combination — typically porcelain bonded to a metal substructure. Porcelain-based bridges offer the most natural color match, while metal-supported options provide maximum strength in high-load bite areas.

Treatment typically requires two office visits. At your first appointment, Dr. Patel examines your teeth, gums, and bone structure, applies local anesthetic, prepares the abutment teeth (rebuilding with a crown if necessary), and takes impressions. A temporary bridge is fitted while your permanent bridge is crafted in the lab. At your second visit, the permanent bridge is carefully checked for fit and permanently seated.

Consistent home care is the key to maximizing your bridge’s lifespan. Brush twice daily, use a floss threader or water flosser to clean beneath the pontic, and schedule regular professional cleanings. With proper maintenance, your bridge can serve you comfortably for well over a decade.
